A founding member of the Society of Entrepreneurs, John Malmo has spent 50 years in advertising and marketing. He was a door-to-door Fuller Brush man and spent seven years in the newspaper business in Boston and Memphis before entering advertising with E.L. Bruce Company, where he was sales promotion manager. Subsequently he was with the National Cotton Council and Gem, Inc., as marketing director and new products development manager.

Malmo founded John Malmo Advertising in 1967 and built it into the largest agency in the Mid-South. He sold the agency to Ward Archer & Assocs. In 1991 and became a full-time marketing consultant in 1994. He is chairman emeritus of Archer Malmo, Inc.

He’s a past president of the Memphis Advertising Federation, recipient of the American Advertising Federation Silver Medal Award, a former director of the American Association of Advertising Agencies, as well as the Advertising & Marketing International Network. He has spoken throughout the U.S. and Far East and formerly wrote a monthly column for two industry magazines and a weekly business commentary column for The Commercial Appeal for 11 years. He is author of the business book, "When on the Mountain There is No Tiger, Monkey Is King," and broadcasts a business commentary on WKNO-FM every Wednesday morning.

Malmo is chairman of the board of trustees of Moore Tech College, a past chairman of the Memphis Park Commission and a former director of the Memphis Symphony, Memphis Boys’ Clubs, Memphis Chamber of Commerce and Opera Memphis. He is a former director of several corporations. He is a graduate of Boston University, an Entrepreneurial Fellow of the University of Memphis, and served two years in the army. He’s married to the former Betty Cotten. Their two children are Virginia White and John ‘Dede’ Malmo, Jr. of Memphis.
